A limb comes through the roof, or wind strips a section of shingles, and rain is forecast for tomorrow. Tarping is what stands between a damaged roof and water running through your ceiling for a week while materials are ordered.
It is also frequently done badly, in ways that cause more damage than the original hole. Here is what a proper tarp actually involves.
What Tarping Is For
A tarp does one job: keep water out of the building until a permanent repair can be made. It is not a repair, it is not a substitute for one, and it does not stop the clock on the underlying damage.
The reason it matters so much is that water moving into a structure causes damage on a completely different scale than a hole in a roof. A missing section of shingles is a roofing problem. Water in the decking, insulation, drywall, and framing becomes a mold and structural problem measured in weeks, and it keeps compounding as long as the opening is open.
What a Proper Tarp Installation Looks Like
The difference between a tarp that holds for weeks and one that fails in the first storm comes down to a few details.
It Runs Over the Ridge
This is the single most important detail and the one most often skipped. A tarp should extend over the peak of the roof and down the opposite slope, not just cover the hole. If the top edge terminates partway up a slope, wind-driven rain runs underneath it — and because the tarp is now holding that water against the decking, it does more damage than no tarp at all.
It Is Anchored, Not Weighted
Bricks, sandbags, and lumber laid on top will move. Wind gets under a loose tarp and turns it into a sail, and the whole assembly leaves in the first gust front. Proper installation anchors the tarp mechanically — commonly by wrapping the edges around furring strips and fastening through them, which spreads load and prevents the fasteners from tearing through the material.
The Fasteners Go Into Sound Structure
Anchoring into decking that is already soft accomplishes nothing. Fasteners need to reach solid material, and the penetrations themselves need to be planned, because every one is a new hole that has to be sealed during the permanent repair.
It Is Tensioned and Sloped
A tarp with slack collects water. A pool of standing water on a tarp is heavy, stretches the material, and finds every seam. The install should be taut and pitched so water runs off.
Why DIY Tarping Often Goes Wrong
We are not going to tell you never to touch it — sometimes rain is an hour out and nobody is available. But go in knowing the failure modes.
- A wet roof after a storm is genuinely dangerous. Wet shingles are slick, loose granules roll underfoot, and storm-damaged decking may not hold weight.
- Hidden soft spots are exactly where you are headed, because you are walking toward the damage.
- Hardware-store poly tarps degrade quickly in sun and tear at grommets under load.
- Covering only the visible hole, without going over the ridge, is the most common error and the one that channels water into the structure.
- There may be downed power lines or compromised electrical in the affected area after a storm.
If you do tarp it yourself, go big — extend well past the damage in every direction and over the ridge — and treat it as a stopgap measured in days.
How Long a Tarp Lasts
A properly installed tarp with quality material is generally measured in weeks to a few months, not seasons. Sunlight breaks down the material, wind works at the edges, and every rain cycle stresses the fasteners.
Treat any tarp as a countdown, not a solution. If a permanent repair is delayed — waiting on materials, waiting on an insurance decision — the tarp should be inspected periodically and replaced before it fails rather than after.
Document Before It Gets Covered
This one is easy to forget in the urgency. Once a tarp is on, the damage underneath is no longer photographable. Before anything goes over it, get pictures: wide shots showing the roof and the house, closer shots of the damaged area, and shots from inside showing any water intrusion at the ceiling.

Interior Mitigation Matters Too
While the roof is compromised, reduce what the water can ruin inside.
- Move furniture, electronics, and anything absorbent out of the affected rooms.
- Put containers under active drips and empty them before they overflow.
- If a ceiling is bulging with trapped water, that is a hazard — it can come down all at once. Keep people out from under it.
- Do not use ceiling fans or lights in a room where water is reaching the fixture.
- Get air moving and dehumidify once the water stops, because East Texas humidity works against drying.
What Happens After the Tarp
Tarping buys the time to do the rest properly: a full inspection of the damage, an accurate scope, materials ordered, and the permanent repair scheduled. If insurance is involved, it also buys time for the adjuster process to run without water continuing to enter the building. What your policy covers is between you and your agent, but mitigation — taking reasonable steps to prevent further damage — is generally expected of a property owner, which is one more reason not to leave an opening open.
