Metal roofing comes up in most replacement conversations in East Texas, and it arrives attached to the same four objections every time. Two are simply wrong, one is partly right, and one is entirely legitimate.

Myth 1: Metal Roofs Are Loud in the Rain
This one comes from real experience — specifically, from barns and carports. Those structures have metal panels fastened to open purlins with nothing underneath. The panel vibrates freely and the sound resonates in an empty space.
A residential metal roof is a different assembly entirely. It goes over solid decking, with underlayment between the metal and the deck, with attic insulation below that, and a ceiling below that. Each layer damps vibration. Most homeowners with metal roofs report a sound level in rain comparable to a shingle roof, and a number find it slightly quieter.
If you are converting a structure with open framing — a shop or a porch — then yes, it will be louder, and that is worth knowing. On a house with a conventional attic, the barn comparison does not apply.
Myth 2: Metal Roofs Attract Lightning
They do not. Lightning is drawn by height and geometry, not by the conductivity of the material at the strike point. A metal roof does not make a house more likely to be struck than an identical house nearby with shingles.
There is an argument in the opposite direction. If a house is struck, metal is non-combustible and conducts the current across a broad surface rather than concentrating it. A wood-and-asphalt roof is combustible; metal is not. In terms of fire outcome after a strike, metal is generally regarded as the safer material.
Myth 3: Metal Roofs Make a House Hotter
Understandable intuition — metal gets hot in the sun, and you can feel it. But what matters is not how hot the surface gets; it is how much heat reaches your living space.
Metal is highly reflective, particularly in lighter colors and with reflective coatings, so a large share of solar radiation is bounced away rather than absorbed. Metal also has very low thermal mass, meaning it sheds heat quickly once the sun moves off it. Dark asphalt shingles absorb heat and hold it, radiating into the attic for hours after sunset.
In a cooling-dominated climate like East Texas, the reflectivity advantage is real. Myth 4: Metal Roofs Are Hail-Proof
This is the one that is not a myth in the way people hope, and it is the honest counterpoint.
Metal handles hail well structurally. It does not bruise the way an asphalt shingle does, it does not lose granules, and it rarely fails functionally from a hail event that would total a shingle roof. In terms of keeping water out, metal is more resilient.
But it dents. Depending on panel gauge, metal type, and hailstone size, a significant hailstorm can leave visible dimpling across the roof. Those dents are typically cosmetic — the roof still performs — but they are permanent and they are visible, particularly on standing seam with broad flat pan areas and in raking afternoon light.
Whether that matters is a personal judgment, and it is worth making before installation rather than after a storm. Some owners are entirely unbothered because the roof still works. Others are unhappy every time they pull into the driveway. Heavier gauge metal and textured or striated panel profiles both reduce visible denting, and both are worth asking about if this concerns you.
The Genuine Trade-Offs Nobody Argues About
Setting the myths aside, the real decision comes down to these.
- Metal costs more up front than asphalt shingles, often substantially.
- Metal typically lasts considerably longer, so the cost per year of service can favor it depending on how long you keep the property.
- Metal requires a more skilled installer, and a badly installed metal roof loses most of its advantages.
- Repairs are more specialized and matching an existing panel years later can be difficult.
- Exposed fastener systems need periodic fastener maintenance; standing seam largely does not.
- Metal sheds water and debris quickly and does not grow the algae streaking common on shingles in humid climates.

The Question Worth Asking Yourself First
Before comparing materials, settle how long you expect to own the property. The case for metal rests heavily on its service life, and that argument only pays off if you are the one who collects on it. On a house you expect to hold for decades, spreading a higher up-front cost across a much longer roof life can work out well. On a property you expect to sell within a few years, you are paying for durability somebody else will use, and how much of that you recover at sale is genuinely uncertain.
Neither answer is wrong. But it is the question that belongs ahead of the noise and lightning debate, because it determines whether the rest of the comparison even matters to you.
