After a hailstorm, the most common thing we hear is “the roof looks fine from the driveway.” That is usually true and almost never conclusive. Hail damage on an asphalt shingle roof is frequently invisible from the ground and obvious from four feet away.
Here is what a real hail strike looks like, what gets mistaken for it, and where to check first.
What Hail Does to a Shingle
An asphalt shingle is a mat saturated with asphalt and surfaced with ceramic granules. Those granules are not decoration — they are the shingle’s sunscreen, shielding the asphalt underneath from ultraviolet light. Strip them away and the asphalt begins to break down.
When a hailstone hits hard enough, two things happen at once. Granules are knocked loose, exposing the asphalt. And the mat underneath is bruised — compressed and fractured, even when nothing has punched through. The bruise is the part that matters, and the part you cannot see in a photo taken from the yard.
The Signature of a Genuine Hail Hit
- A roughly circular dark spot where granules are gone and black asphalt shows through.
- A soft, spongy feel when you press it — like a bruise on fruit. This is the single most reliable indicator.
- Random scatter. Hail does not follow rows, seams, or nail lines. Damage that lines up in a pattern is almost never hail.
- Matching damage on soft metal around the roof — dents in gutters, downspouts, vents, valleys, and turbine caps.
- No clear directional pattern on the shingle itself, though one or two slopes may be hit far harder than the others depending on wind direction during the storm.
That last point is why a partial inspection misleads. A north slope can be untouched while the west slope took the whole storm.
What Gets Mistaken for Hail Damage
Plenty of roof defects look like hail to an untrained eye, and calling them hail sets up a disappointing conversation later.
Blistering
Small raised bumps that pop and leave a shallow crater with granule loss. It comes from moisture or gas trapped in the asphalt during manufacturing, worsened by heat. Blisters have clean, sharp edges and no bruise underneath. Hail hits are softer and irregular. In an East Texas summer, blistering is extremely common.
Granule Loss From Age

Mechanical and Foot Traffic Damage
Scuffs in a line, damage concentrated near a satellite dish or an HVAC unit, or a path of scraped shingles usually means someone walked the roof. It concentrates where people work, which hail never does.
Tree Abrasion
A branch resting on shingles scrubs granules off in an arc as it moves with the wind. The shape gives it away.
Where to Look Without Climbing
You can gather real information from the ground, and you should, because getting on a roof after a storm is genuinely dangerous — wet shingles, loose granules acting like ball bearings, and hidden soft decking.
- Gutters and downspouts — dents in soft aluminum are a strong proxy for hail size and intensity.
- The base of downspouts — a sudden heavy accumulation of granules is meaningful.
- Metal vents, turbines, and the chimney cap — dents here mean the roof took the same hits.
- Window screens, siding, and the AC condenser fins — if these are dinged, the roof was hit.
- Fence caps, mailbox, and the grill lid — ordinary soft metal around the property tells the story.
- Skylight frames and the flashing around them.

Why Timing Matters More Than People Expect
Hail bruises do not always leak immediately. A bruised shingle can hold water out for a season or two while the exposed asphalt weathers, and then fail. That delay is why homeowners sometimes connect a leak to a storm long after the fact, and why damage that seems minor is worth documenting now rather than later.
Insurance policies generally have time limits on reporting, and those limits vary by policy and carrier. What your policy requires is a question for your agent — but the practical point stands regardless: an inspection and a photo record shortly after a storm is worth far more than a reconstruction attempted a year on.
What a Proper Inspection Covers
A real hail inspection is methodical, not a glance. It covers every slope separately, because exposure varies. It includes a test square — a marked-off section, often ten by ten feet, where hits are counted to establish density rather than existence. It checks the soft metals. It documents the condition of the shingles independent of the hail, since age and prior damage matter. And it produces photographs, not just a verdict.
Be wary of an inspection that produces an immediate certainty without any of that, in either direction. “You definitely need a new roof” delivered in five minutes from the driveway is a sales pitch. So is “you’re fine” from the same vantage point.
